MICPA Awards Honor the Brightest and Best in Accounting
TROY, MICHIGAN, 10/29/2024 –On November 13, the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) hosted its annual Celebrate event at the Gem Theatre in Detroit, recognizing the leaders and organizations shaping the future of the accounting profession. The event highlighted the outstanding contributions of individuals and organizations in accounting and beyond, while also supporting the next generation of CPAs.
The evening was a celebration of excellence, with the MICPA raising funds for the Michigan Accountancy Foundation. This foundation provides scholarships to accounting students, grants to educators, and encourages career exploration within the field.
Emceed by Emmy-winning journalist and former Fox 2 News anchor Huel Perkins, the event honored eight distinguished honorees across various categories. The awardees included:
- Accounting Teaching Excellence Award – Dr. Howard Bunsis, PhD, JD, Professor of Accounting at Eastern Michigan University
- Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award – Hungerford
- Excellence in Accounting Award – Grand Valley State University – School of Accounting, Accounting Careers + Education Discovery Program
- Excellence in Accounting Award – Michigan State University – Master of Science in Accounting Program
- Impact Award – Michelle Randall, CPA, CGMA, Professor of Accounting at Schoolcraft College
- Rising Star Award – Kellen Riker, CPA, Manager at Yeo & Yeo CPAs & Advisors
- Student Champion of the Year – Claire Shannon, CPA Candidate, Recent Graduate of Wayne State University Mike Ilitch School of Business
- Volunteer of the Year – Anthony Rosenblum, CPA, Business Development Director at BDO
In addition to the awards, the event also recognized the recipients of the 2024 Women to Watch awards. Katie Connell, CPA, senior audit & assurance manager at Deloitte, was honored as the Emerging Leader, while Peggy Haw Jury, CPA, CGMA, retired partner at Plante Moran, received the Experienced Leader award. Wayne Roberts, member and co-chair of business practice at Bodman PLC, was honored with the prestigious Thomas M. Hoatlin Award.
