Phil Saurman Announces Retirement from Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors

After 47 years of service in public accounting, including 20 years with Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors, Phil Saurman is announcing his retirement effective December 31, 2016. Phil has made numerous contributions to the profession and to the firm. Most notably is his commitment to Michigan school districts and their audit needs.

Phil has also had a profound effect on the development of team members.  Under Phil’s guidance, Adriane Schrauben, CPA, MBA, Shareholder, has become the third female shareholder of the firm and will be taking over Phil’s practice area.  She shared, “Phil has been a tremendous mentor to me over the past 16 years. I appreciate the time, energy and effort he has poured, not only into me, but into our entire team, to help make his transition successful for both the firm and our clients.”

In 1967, when Phil was two classes short of graduating from Aquinas College, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and eventually sent to Vietnam.  When he returned, he finished his Bachelor of Arts in Economics degree, earned his Master of Arts in Economics degree at Western Michigan University and gained his CPA certification from the State of Michigan. During that time, he worked for the firm Sherk, DeVries & Krenz CPAs, which he ended up owning.  In 1998, his firm merged with Hungerford, Aldrin, Nichols & Carter, PC (now known as Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors).  Phil built the firm’s governmental audit group that specializes in servicing school districts, cities, townships, villages, libraries and other municipalities.  He is considered one of the top professionals in his industry and has spoken regularly at conferences throughout the nation.
